HOW-TO POST · 03 8 MIN READ

The real cost of AI ads vs traditional production.

If you've been quoted ₹50 lakh for a 30-second commercial, this post is for you. If you've been told an AI ad costs ₹10,000 and looks the same, this post is also for you.

Both numbers are real. Both are misleading. Let's break down what AI ads actually cost in 2026 and what you get for the money.

A · BENCHMARKTraditional production

The traditional production benchmark.

According to Simulmedia's 2025 industry guide, traditional 30-second commercials cost between $10,000 to $50,000 (₹8 lakh to ₹42 lakh) in the US, with high-end productions reaching $200,000+ (₹1.7 crore+). Indian production rates run lower, but the structure is the same:

  • Pre-production (scripting, storyboarding, casting): 20% of budget
  • Production day (crew, equipment, talent, location): 50% of budget
  • Post-production (editing, color, sound, graphics): 30% of budget

Timeline: 4 to 8 weeks from concept to delivery. For a ₹20 lakh Indian commercial, you're looking at roughly ₹4 lakh pre, ₹10 lakh production day, ₹6 lakh post. That's the standard.

B · BENCHMARKAI production

The AI production benchmark.

According to Atom Communications' 2026 industry analysis, a 30-second AI-assisted ad in India costs ₹40,000 to ₹1.2 lakh at the entry level. According to Harvard Business Review's marketing research, early AI adopters are seeing cost reductions of 60 to 85% while maintaining acceptable quality for performance advertising.

But here's where it splits. There are two completely different categories of "AI ad."

// TWO CATEGORIES

Same label. Different planets.

Both have a place. The wrong question is "which is cheaper." The right one is "what does my brand need to look like?"

⌖ CATEGORY 01

Template-driven AI ad — ₹40K to ₹1.5 lakh

Generic stock characters. Pre-built scene templates. No character sheets. 2–3 day turnaround. Looks recognisably AI. Good for: performance ads where volume beats craft.

⌖ CATEGORY 02

Directed AI film — ₹2 to ₹15 lakh

Custom character sheets built from scratch. Specific locations, lighting, mood. Real direction on every shot. Hybrid workflow when needed. 1–4 week turnaround. Indistinguishable from cinema if done right. Good for: brand films, hero ads, premium campaigns.

C · CASEReal-world example

The Kalshi NBA Finals ad.

In June 2025, Kalshi (a prediction market platform) needed an NBA Finals broadcast ad. Their agency quoted $200,000 (₹1.7 crore) and 6 to 8 weeks.

They instead hired solo AI filmmaker PJ Accetturo. Using Veo 3, Gemini, and ChatGPT, he produced a broadcast-quality commercial in 2 days for $2,000 (₹1.7 lakh). That's a 99% cost reduction and a 21× time reduction. The ad ran on national TV. Nobody complained.

D · BREAKDOWNWhere the money goes

What you actually pay for.

Honest breakdown of where money goes inside a directed AI film:

  1. 25%
    Pre-productionBriefing calls. Moodboard building. Character-sheet generation (this is where 30% of generation costs land). Storyboarding. Reference research.
  2. 35%
    GenerationImage generation (200 to 2,400 stills per project). Video generation (50 to 200 clips). Multiple model passes. API and tool costs — real money, paid per generation.
  3. 40%
    Post-productionEditing the AI footage. Colour grading. Sound design (often real audio, not AI). Final delivery in multiple ratios and languages.

The generation isn't actually the most expensive part. The post-production is. Most of the cost is human time, not AI cost.

// REAL NUMBERS

What our projects actually cost.

₹1.5–3L 30-sec product ad · single language
₹2.5–5L 30-sec ad · 3 language variants
₹4–8L 60-sec brand film
₹10–25L 3-min animation or short film
// SAVINGS vs NOT

What you save (and what you don't).

⌖ AI CUTS

Things AI production cuts

Location costs (no travel, no permits). Crew costs (no DOP, gaffer, AD team). Talent costs (no celebrity fees, no day rates). Equipment rentals. Catering, transport, insurance.

⌖ STILL NEEDED

Things AI production does NOT cut

Creative direction. Editing. Sound design. Colour grading. Revision rounds with the brand. When a studio quotes ₹40,000, they're cutting one or more of these. Usually all of them. That's why the output looks like AI slop.

E · WHEN NOTWhere AI loses

When AI is the wrong choice.

We tell brands no all the time. Three cases where AI is not the right call:

  1. 01
    You need a real product hero shot.AI can't perfectly render your specific product unless we build a full character sheet, which often costs more than just shooting it.
  2. 02
    You need a real human face.AI can do uncanny-valley faces, but for a brand spokesperson, real beats synthetic every time.
  3. 03
    You need to shoot during a real event.AI can't capture a moment that happened. It can only recreate one.
// FREQUENTLY ASKED

Five questions about pricing.

Q.01How much does an AI ad cost in India?

Entry level: ₹40,000 to ₹1.5 lakh. Mid tier: ₹2 to ₹8 lakh. Premium: ₹8 to ₹15 lakh+ depending on scope and deliverables.

Q.02Is AI advertising cheaper than traditional production?

Yes, typically 60 to 85% cheaper for directed AI work, and up to 99% cheaper for template-driven work. But quality varies massively.

Q.03How fast can an AI ad be produced?

Simple AI ads: 2 to 5 days. Directed AI films: 1 to 4 weeks. Complex animation or long-form: 4 to 12 weeks.

Q.04Will AI ads replace traditional commercials?

For performance advertising and most product ads, AI is replacing traditional production fast. For Super Bowl–style emotional brand films, traditional production still has an edge for now.

Q.05What's the ROI of AI vs traditional ads?

According to Meta's September 2024 data, AI-augmented campaigns show comparable or better engagement metrics at a fraction of the production cost.
